When being user-focused ain’t so easy

Library communications is always about your users, right? But that’s not as easy as it sounds. You gather metrics but they don’t give you a complete picture of user needs. And sometimes you can get so wrapped up in institutional ideas about messaging, design, and signage that you lose focus on your patrons’ actual usage of the library. In this presentation, the NC State University Libraries’ External Relations team discusses how they use user-centered design and writing to break organizational logjams and keep their work focused on library patrons. Spoiler alert: They’ll even dish on recovering from spectacular failures.
