On May 22, 2018, a fire broke out on the roof of Kansas State University’s Hale Library. Due to catastrophic smoke and water damage, the building was closed for over a year and the 1.5 million item collection moved to storage. While most libraries plan a full renovation over the course of years, K-State had months. Timelines for architectural planning, insurance negotiations and fundraising have occurred simultaneously. This presentation will focus on the communication strategies used to raise awareness and funding in the face of overwhelming challenges. While this situation is unique, there are takeaways for any library.
