Deliberative Democracy in the Library: Partnering to Create Social Justice Spaces

At Saint Martin’s University over the last three years, the library has partnered with the school’s Diversity and Equity Center (DEC) to host discussions on race based on foundational concepts of deliberative democracy and addressing concerns some librarians have raised about the “neutrality” of libraries. Our spaces, they claimed, have served as de facto mediators for oppressive ideologies such as racism, sexism, etc. By cooperating with the DEC, the library has sought to position itself as one of several social justice spaces on campus, reinforcing the notion that anti-oppression work can/should be part of the mission of every campus unit.
