Public engagement is at the core of the University of Illinois’ mission, and directly benefits the library by driving the use of collections and services, helping reach underserved populations, garnering public support for the library, and fostering a culture of lifelong learning. As engagement activities are not equally implemented across libraries on campus, a working group undertook an environmental scan of the library in order to understand the motivations and barriers to engagement activities. Outcomes included a set of recommendations aimed at instilling a library-wide culture that promotes and celebrates engagement. This talk presents the scan results, recommendations, and impact.
